Keith Jarrett is widely considered to be the best pianist in the world.  While he is a fabulous classical pianist, he is better known for his jazz.  He is however, best known as an on-the-spot improviser.  He has repeatedly improvised entire concerts, making up complex music on the spot.  Sometimes, he even does it with other musicians.

Here is a link to an interview with him.  It is worth the read if you are serious about music.  Note his understanding of music.   It is largely unrivaled.  Note how he speaks of jazz and classical and the relationships between these two forms of art music.  (And yes, both are art music.)

This is truly a man that knows what he is talking about.
