I have spent the evening listening critically to my new project and making mix suggestions.  I have to admit that I would almost rather be at the dentist.  In fact, this is by far my least favorite part of the recording process.

The reason why I hate listening at this point is because I know that there are limited changes that can be made anyway.  Most imperfections I hear are not going to be fixed.  We are going to production with them.  That is a hard thing to deal with.  A bigger fear is that I am going to hear something that I just can't bear to live with at all.

The imperfections I hear are not wrong notes.  They are very subtle things that likely are not going to be heard by anyone else.  But they drive me crazy.

There are fixes and changes that I am suggesting that will improve the project though.  Those include such things as the following:

1) Backing off or bringing to the front a particular instrument during a section of the song.

2) Adjusting the entrance of an instrument if they came in late or early.  There is quite a bit of this, and surprisingly, most of those issues can be fixed.

3) Adjusting the piano sound in various ways.  This is an obsession for me and it is too complicated to go into here.

Little things add up to big differences, and every change is important.  That is why this part of the process is so vital.  We should be done within a few days, and we are going to have the CDs available within a few weeks.  Also, my first concert with the new music is a week from Sunday.

Will you do me a personal favor?
