I was over there for a week with GMC Scotland, a large convention of evangelical Christians who love music. I suppose there were about 1,200 in attendence from all over Europe. Eight groups performed music ranging from bluegrass to acapella to southern gospel. Half of the groups were from the US and the others were from Europe.
To say that I was impressed would be an understatement. The organization for the convention was top notch in every way. We were on the north side of Scotland (near Aberdeen) right on the North Sea. We stayed in the home of one of the organizers who lives about 50 yards from the edge of the cliff going down to the sea. An active lighthouse sits about 400 yards off shore. It was just breathtaking. We also got to visit some castles including the famous one at Loch Ness (no, we did not see the sea monster).
Scottish people are amazingly friendly and hospitable. Our hostess, Margaret, was incredible. I believe that every minute we were awake in the house, food was on the table. We ate at least four meals a day and when we were not eating, we were drinking tea.
We did five concerts in three days including three on Sunday. They were long (lasting until close to midnight) and after the concerts, we ate again, so we did not sleep much. But we all enjoyed every minute.
I will write much more this week about things I learned and things that made me think. International travel is very valuable if you want a balanced perspective, and I saw some things this week that made me rethink what I thought I knew. I will talk more about that as I have more time to write. Right now however, I am buried in work.
Will you do me a personal favor?
