I am doing something this summer that I have unfortunately not done in years--I am taking a hiatus from my normal work (as CEO of Vitabase).  I will still be in the office but just not very much.

Back in 2001, when I was working for Delta Airlines as a software programmer, I did something similar.  I took a 40% pay cut but only had to work three days a week.  It was a great time in my life because I got to work on what was to become Vitabase.  By the time the three months had ended, I was within a month of ready to quit Delta and focus on my business full time.

Working for yourself is great if you actually take advantage of the benefits.  During my early years as CEO, I did take advantage.  I remember going to the driving range every day, going on family events, in general, just living a relaxed life.  But over time, something happened and I started surrendering that lifestyle for one that was much more hectic and crowded.

Starting in June, I am going to reverse that trend.  That is in spite of the fact that I have tons of work to do at Vitabase.  I know that there will always be tons of work to do at Vitabase but I will only live my 37th year one time.  Also, my family needs me and I am going to spend a lot of time with them.

You may be wondering what this means for my music.  I am booked for concerts at least two weekends a month through the summer and that is as much travel as I want to do.  But I am going to take the opportunity to launch a few new things that I am excited about.  Here is a quick summary of my music projects.

1) Portraits of Hope - Finally in duplication and will be here in about a week.  You can purchase it online at any time and we will ship when they get here.

2) Portraits of Hope arrangements - I am within weeks of being able to offer all the arrangements on my new project in book form or by download.  These arrangements will be sold with my orchestration tracks so you can play them just as I do in performances.

3) New piano-only project - I am starting work on a new project this summer that I hope to record in the fall.  It will feature a return to very simple and quiet piano-only music.

4) Church pianist community - My plan is to launch a forum for church pianists to share questions, tips, and arrangements.  We may also do masters classes online.  If you have thoughts about this concept, send them my way.

5) Church pianist instructional courses.  The success we have seen with Inspirational Improvisation has frankly surprised me a bit, but there is definitely a demand for that kind of instruction.   So, I have been working on lining up some of the best church pianists I know who will be doing instructional DVDs that will be similar to Inspirational Improvisation.  I will talk more about that in coming months.

Sounds like a quiet summer...
