I grew up in a Christian home in Tennessee.  I started piano lessons when I was eight and because we went to a tiny rural church, I became a church pianist almost immediately.  When I was 12, after a nearly fatal accident in a swimming pool, I became aware of my personal need for God and accepted Jesus Christ as my saviour from the consequences of my sin.

As I moved into high school, piano became less of a drudgery and more of a passion.  Rather than stopping practice after 30 minutes (actually, I could get away with 27 minutes without my parents noticing), I began practicing more.  I was an above average pianist but far from an outstanding one.  I was the kind of pianist who would get Excellent ratings instead of Superior ratings and would come in second or third in the contests.  I say that to encourage those of you who find yourself in that position to keep working.

I remember going to Dino concerts during that time and wanting to do what he did.  I really aspired to be a concert pianist.  However, when it came time to graduate and pick a major in college, I was faced with a tough choice--learn something safe that I knew I could do well and make a good living (software) or major in music and face the uncertainty and long odds of success.

I chose software.

It is ironic that my decision to turn away from music in the long run created the potential for me to be a professional musician.  That is where Divine timing comes into play.  In my next post, I will tell more about how that happend.
