Growing up in Tennessee during the 80's, Alabama was our biggest competitor and I hated them.  Now, I really am sort of lukewarm about them.  I am sitting here watching them in the Sugar Bowl.  Utah is making them look a little silly and I actually feel a bit sorry for them.

I have been fascinated by Nick Saban (Alabama's coach) during this game.  I have never seen such agony on a coach's face.  Of course, Saban never really looks happy even when he is winning by 60.  He is probably the most intense coach in college football and is never satisfied with something or other.

I long to be around people like Saban--people who are that intensely passionate about what they do.  Frankly, I don't know many people like that.  In fact, I could not name more than a few.  But the ones I do know are a treat to be around.  They are passionate about performing at their very best and passionate about getting better.  No, they are not the happiest people around.  People like Saban are never happy with where they are--they want to get better.

Now, I know in the case of Saban, I need to make a few caveats.  I know that he may have been deceptive about leaving Miami.  I also know that people can become unbalanced and put their work above other things that are at least as important.  I am not condoning that in any way.

But, the opposite and more common situation is much less appetizing.   Most of us could use more passion and dedication to making ourselves better.  So, I appreciate people like Saban.  I wish there were more like him.
